IFAD at COP28: Pioneering efforts towards sustainable agriculture

As the world gathers for COP28, we are also readying ourselves to attend and put rural people at the centre of the global climate negotiations. A key player, IFAD is set to drive initiatives to promote climate-smart agriculture, skill development, and ensure food security. During the two weeks, we will contribute to a web of collaborative endeavours, participate in high-profile sessions, and join a collective commitment dedicated to shaping a sustainable future.

This year, IFAD is collaborating with CGIAR, FAO, and the Rockefeller Foundation to host the #FoodPavilion, where we will discuss the role of agrifood systems in climate solutions, nourishing the world, and providing livelihoods. The goal of IFAD's involvement at COP28 is to underscore and prioritize the significance of climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience for small-scale producers and vulnerable rural communities.

Transforming global food systems for climate action

Acknowledging the driving force of global food systems in climate change, we will highlight the need for increased financial support. IFAD13 underscores the integration of climate finance and the promotion of transformative benefits beyond emissions reduction, extending to critical aspects such as biodiversity conservation, food security, and poverty alleviation.  

Grounded in a commitment to holistic rural development, IFAD sees climate change as a shared responsibility that demands a comprehensive strategy, with rural communities at the forefront of driving profound change. IFAD adopts a people-centred approach, prioritizing long-term resilience in fragile contexts and supporting rural livelihoods and institutions for community-led transformative change.

Inclusive decision-making, with a particular focus on gender, youth, Indigenous Peoples, social inclusion and nutrition, ensures that the voices of those most affected by climate change shape policies.

IFAD's participation at COP28 features a series of impactful events that address key aspects of climate change and sustainable agriculture. Events include shedding light on global climate finance challenges, launching the Africa Rural Climate Adaptation Financing Mechanism (ARCAFIM), and addressing climate vulnerability in Small Island Development States. We will also collaborate with civil society to explore innovative strategies for a sustainable food future and explore the impact of climate change on local cuisines with Senegalese Chef Pierre Thiam. The series concludes with discussions on scaling nature-based solutions, ensuring sustainable food systems, and exploring digital innovations for climate-resilient agriculture.

IFAD also co-leads three UNFCCC side events at COP28, addressing agrifood systems, aligning development, humanitarian and climate finance, and discussing climate resilience in Latin America and the Caribbean.

A call to action for sustainable investments

IFAD's engagement at COP28 underscores the pivotal role of collaboration with the private sector in driving sustainable agricultural practices, promoting investments, diversifying rural livelihoods, expanding market access, and ensuring the prosperity of rural communities. COP 28 will also be our last milestone event until we all meet again in Paris on 14-15 December for the final IFAD13 consultation session as we build momentum for a successful replenishment.

It is imperative we recognize the impact of sustainable rural investments, emphasize the need for resilient gains and progress and break the cycle of crises through sustainable, inclusive, and impactful investments.
